Kannenstrauch
Alle Arten der Gattung sind Rankgewächse, die viele Meter hoch an Bäumen empor wachsen können. Man unterscheidet grob in Hoch- und Tieflandarten. Die Hochlandarten benötigen kühlere Temperaturen, wachsen deutlich langsamer und sind etwas schwieriger zu kultivieren. Alle Arten benötigen unbedingt eine höhere Luftfeuchtigkeit. Die meisten Arten kommen auf Borneo vor.
Die eigentlichen Blätter sind zu Kannen umgeformt, die durch ihre Form, Farbe und auch Duft Tiere anlocken und fangen. Die Tiere rutschen vom Kannenrand ins Innere und werden dort von der eigenen Verdauungsflüssigkeit aufgelöst. Kannen von großen Arten wie z.B. rajah können gut vier Liter Wasser fassen und fangen dann auch größere Beutetiere wie Vögel, Eidechsen oder Mäuse!
